Growing up around Houston and now living in Austin at the edge of the hill country, I'd always heard about the Kerrville Folk Festival and the New Folk competition in particular. It's a really weird thing for me to think of music and songwriting in competitive terms, because that's not really what it's about, but being a part of New Folk and getting introduced into the Kerrville family was really refreshing and eye opening for me. Rather than a competition, it felt more like a showcase for 32 up-and-coming songwriters (a group I felt quite honored to be a part of), in front of an audience that wasn't there to judge the best song, but to hear the next generation of folk singers. I met friends from across the country that are on the same crazy ride I'm on, that are writing their part of the song circle as they go. I met some of my favorite songwriters and got to play them some of my songs, and now I'm honored to be a Kerrville New Folk winner - it's a blessing to be honored for your art and/or your job, and it's especially nice to be a part of Kerrville's esteemed New Folk history.

So from Kerrville, I'm back home in Austin, back to playing a few shows solo, but these days it seems most of them are with the Band of Heathens, a really great band with some great songwriters, Ed Jurdi and Colin Brooks (also a past New Folk Winner). I've got a new solo album coming out in June called Here Comes the Flood, and lots of new things happening with the Heathens... studio time for the next record, live DVD filmings, European tours, the Kerrville Folk Festival... One hell of a van ride.
